Communications Competitive Analysis

NEXIOS Communications against the real alternative — a reseller markup, or a surveillance platform built for someone ten times your size.

A regulated firm that needs its people to text and call clients has exactly three real paths: pay a CPaaS reseller’s markup and build your own compliance archive yourself, buy an enterprise capture-everything platform priced and sold for banks, or run your own carrier account through a console that’s compliant by default. NEXIOS Communications is built for the third path — here’s how it actually compares to the other two.

NEXIOS Communications’ own listing reads “email for current discount price.” The monthly figure used here is a recommendation for your review, not a confirmed or published price.

The SEC and FINRA rules a communications archive has to satisfy
Why this market exists

The SEC has fined over 100 firms more than $2.2 billion for this exact failure

Since December 2021, the SEC has brought a continuous wave of enforcement actions against broker-dealers and investment advisers for “off-channel communications” — employees texting or messaging clients on channels the firm never captured or archived. Penalties have run from an $81 million, 16-firm settlement to a $63 million, 12-firm settlement as recently as January 2025 (the SEC itself called this a possible final wave). FINRA Rule 3110 and 4511, and SEC Rule 17a-4, are the recordkeeping and supervision rules underneath nearly every one of these cases.

The cautionary tale on the other side: in May 2025, TeleMessage — a mobile-message-archiving company Smarsh acquired in February 2024 to power its own “Capture Mobile” product — was breached through an exposed endpoint on its archive servers, and suspended service. The incident (widely reported after it emerged the same tool had been used inside the Trump administration) is a reminder that a compliance archive is itself a high-value target: centralizing every regulated firm’s texts in one vendor’s infrastructure concentrates the risk it’s meant to reduce. NEXIOS Communications’ Backup & Retention Vault exists specifically for this: a firm’s archive is also exportable, encrypted, to a cloud bucket that firm — not NEXIOS — owns and holds the keys to.
Two different problems

A business-phone console and an enterprise capture platform solve different things

It’s easy to compare NEXIOS Communications against the wrong category. These are genuinely different products solving different problems — a firm evaluating one often still needs to think about the other.

CPaaS consoles & resellers

Twilio, and resold business-phone systems built on top of a carrier. They get your firm sending texts and placing calls. Compliance archiving, webhook verification and credential security are usually something you build yourself, or an add-on.

  • You pay the platform’s own usage markup on top of carrier rates
  • No compliance archive by default — that’s engineering work
  • Good for: general-purpose apps outside regulated finance

Enterprise capture & archive platforms

Smarsh, Global Relay, Theta Lake, Comma Compliance. They sit on top of channels you don’t fully control — personal WhatsApp, iMessage, Slack, Teams, Bloomberg Chat — and try to catch what already happened across all of them, including BYOD.

  • Priced and sold for firms with many employees across many channels
  • Solves “what did my people use that I didn’t provide”
  • Good for: firms that need enterprise-wide surveillance across channels they don’t own

NEXIOS Communications

A console on your own Telnyx carrier account. It doesn’t try to catch every channel your employees might use — it gives your firm one real channel that’s archived, encrypted and API-accessible by default, so there’s less reason for anyone to go off-channel in the first place.

  • You pay your own carrier usage directly, no markup
  • Every send is archived through the same code path every API call takes
  • Good for: a firm’s own first-party SMS/voice line, not BYOD surveillance
What each path actually costs

Markup, enterprise contract, or carrier rate

Twilio and raw carrier pricing are per-segment and public. The enterprise capture platforms are almost entirely quote-only — Comma Compliance is the one vendor in this space that publishes a real number.

NEXIOS Communications
flat, recommended · + your own Telnyx usage
$299/mo per workspace
Twilio (direct CPaaS)
usage pricing + markup
~$0.0079+/SMS segment
Raw carrier API
no console, build it yourself
lower base rate, no markup
Comma Compliance
published, per active user
$33/user/mo
Smarsh / Global Relay
enterprise, not published
quote-only

NEXIOS Communications’ $299/month is a flat, recommended price for your review — per workspace, not per seat, so it doesn’t climb as the firm’s headcount does the way Comma’s $33/user/month does once a team passes roughly nine people. Comma also charges $15/user/month to keep an offboarded employee’s archive searchable through the retention window, and states that legacy enterprise archivers commonly layer a base fee plus $8–$20/user/month per connector on top — that per-connector estimate is Comma’s own published comparison, not independently confirmed here, since none of Smarsh, Global Relay or Theta Lake publish pricing themselves. Twilio’s rate is a commonly-cited approximate SMS segment price; verify current rates before quoting a customer.

The enterprise capture-platform landscape

Real vendors, built for a different scope and a different buyer

None of these compete with NEXIOS Communications feature-for-feature — they solve the broader, harder problem of catching communications across channels a firm doesn’t operate itself. Useful context for what a firm might still need on top of its own compliant channel, not a straight swap.

Smarsh

Captures SMS, WhatsApp, iMessage, voice and more across corporate and BYOD devices; named a Leader in Gartner’s 2025 Magic Quadrant for Digital Communications Governance. Acquired TeleMessage in Feb. 2024 to power its mobile capture.

quote-only, not published
TeleMessage (now “Capture Mobile”) was breached May 2025; service was suspended.

Global Relay

“Communications intelligence” platform: captures, archives, supervises and discovers across voice, mobile, chat, email and AI channels. Has a dedicated broker-dealer solutions page and SMS/voice capture partnerships (e.g. CellTrust).

quote-only, not published

Theta Lake

Compliance and security layer mainly for collaboration platforms — Zoom, Teams, Slack — plus a dedicated voice-compliance product. Positions itself as a connector across a firm’s existing archives, not primarily an SMS tool.

quote-only, modular pricing

Comma Compliance

Newer entrant capturing 40+ channels (iMessage, WhatsApp, Signal, Slack, Teams, Bloomberg Chat) at point of delivery, with some connector capture code published on GitHub. The one vendor here with real published pricing.

$33/user/mo published

Twilio

The dominant general-purpose CPaaS platform. Powerful SDK and docs, but no compliance archive, webhook signing posture, or regulated-finance framing built in — that’s all work your own team takes on.

usage + markup, no archive

NEXIOS Communications

Built specifically for regulated finance’s own first-party channel: your own Telnyx account, compliance-grade auto-archive on every send, a real off/auto/manual call-recording switch, signed webhook verification, encrypted per-workspace credentials, a bring-your-own-cloud Backup & Retention Vault, and a real API the rest of your stack can call — no carrier markup, no reseller in the middle.

What it actually does

Built specifically for a regulated firm’s own channel

Every item below is a shipped, documented feature of the live NEXIOS Communications console — not a roadmap item.

Bring your own carrier (BYOK)

SMS and voice run on your own Telnyx account — no reseller markup, and your 10DLC/compliance obligations stay yours.

Click-to-call voice bridge

Real calls placed through your carrier’s API to an agent callback number — not a browser softphone toy.

Compliance-grade message archive

Every send is archived automatically through the same code path every API call takes — not a separate, skippable step.

Signed webhook verification

Inbound SMS and voice webhooks are verified against your own carrier signing key before anything is trusted.

Encrypted per-workspace credentials

Carrier API keys and tokens are AES-256-GCM encrypted at rest, scoped to each workspace.

Call recording

A real per-workspace off/auto/manual switch — auto records every bridged call (inbound find-me/follow-me and transfer-based connects alike), manual lets an agent start recording live, landing in the same compliance archive either way.

Backup & Retention Vault

Pushes an encrypted, versioned export of your workspace’s own archive — messages, calls, emails, compliance records — to a cloud bucket you own. Bring-your-own-cloud, built for FINRA Rule 4511 / SEC 17a-4(f) retention. NEXIOS never holds the keys.

Email via your own SMTP

Outbound transactional email through the workspace’s own SMTP server, archived the same way as every SMS and call — on both success and failure. A narrow, single-purpose feature, not a mailbox-wide capture system like the enterprise archivers’ email products.

A real API the rest of your stack can call

A documented /api/v1/messages endpoint other systems — your CRM, your accounting platform — can call directly, with the same archive and audit trail. Already running in production: NEXIOS BD pages a compliance officer through this exact API the moment a real SEC Rule 17a-11 notice deadline fires.
